September 16, 2011

Wheeling Jesuit University’s HEALTHeWV (HeWV) program has reached an electronic milestone, providing the vehicle for which clients have prescribed one million prescriptions electronically for patients across the state. HeWV is one of the first programs of its kind to reach this milestone.

The electronic health records-based disease management, health outcomes improvement and health promotion program administers the Prescription Order Entry function which allows healthcare providers to write, renew, print or e-fax patients' prescriptions.

Not only does the function enable a more efficient prescription process, it also increases patient safety by reducing prescription errors, automating the process of checking drug interactions, as well as automating the process of checking allergies. Prescription Order Entry allows the healthcare provider to view a list of warnings and precautions for patients based on the drugs being prescribed and the patients’ current medications and allergies. The medication being prescribed is also added to the patient’s list of medications.

Dr. Chad Turner of Cabin Creek Health Systems sent the milestone prescription. "I am proud of our accomplishments at Cabin Creek Health Systems using HEALTHeWV. Its capabilities continue to challenge us as healthcare providers, in part by measuring quality of care and ultimately determining ways to improve,” says Dr. Turner.

“Prescription Order Entry allows for a more streamlined and efficient process, but also affords an additional safety resource/checkpoint as well. HEALTHeWV is a valuable tool for healthcare providers to improve the quality of care to the patient,” says Sandy Linsky, Interim Director of HEALTHeWV.

HEALTHeWV is a comprehensive health care improvement program developed specifically for West Virginia’s medically underserved, rural communities. It is an electronic health records-based disease management, health outcomes improvement and health promotion program built upon the Army’s award-winning HEALTHeFORCES program. There are currently over twenty clinics, four health departments, three school-based clinics and three academic curricular sites enrolled in the program.
