Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) / HITECH Act Security and Privacy Requirements
The HEALTHeWV (HeWV) Program complies with electronic medical record and health information quality, security, and privacy standards and regulations required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act (2009). Both voluntary and mandatory policies and procedural compliance may be necessary for HeWV project staff and program participants to meet HIPAA and HITECH rules and regulations. Compliance will be achieved by the execution of contractual documents and continuous review and analyses of program policies and procedures. All HEALTHeWV staff, who are employees of Wheeling Jesuit University (WJU), are required to comply with the provisions detailed in the WJU Human Resources Workplace Practices: Medical Files/Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Policy and the rules and regulations outlined by the WJU Institutional Review Board (IRB) when applicable.
